About
My name is Geoff Maddox. I founded Hate Crime Awareness, Long Beach in March, 2009. At the time, I was an intern with the city in Long Beach's Human Dignity Program. As part of my internship, I was involved in a meeting with a victim of a Hate Crime. This victim expressed frustration and concern over the apparent lack of services provided to victims by the city of Long Beach. As there are numerous services available, this identified a disconnect between those that may have been victimized and the many services that are provided.
As a result, I went to my supervisor to inquire of the feasibility of creating a marketing campaign for the Hate Crime Hotline. Unfortunately, due to the current fiscal situation, there was no money to undertake such a task. This left mein a bind. I knew that something needed to be done, but with no funds to do it, I had to figure out a way to do it on my own.
Enter Hate Crime Awareness, Long Beach. If I was to create my own non-profit to raise money to buy the signs, flyers, cards, t-shirts, etc., I would have my marketing campaign, so that's what I did.
